When I was a little girl I longed to be a glamorous movie star. Now? I find a fault with all the women I would wish to become in the past. Things in their lives I wouldn’t dig. Courage is calling someone else on their crap. And listening when someone who loves you calls you on YOURS. There are strong men in our society who would die for the woman singing this to them. And men who will do anything to silence her. They want to silence this woman because of fear. Being around all that man power used to make me shrink my feminine power. It used to make me “man up” — toughen myself, or guy myself up — so that I would be seen as worthy of conversation, not just as the object of their visual quest. I used to feel like it was either be the feast for their voracious eyes or be taken seriously. Sheila Kelley |
