Mmmmm….burlesque!
Burlesque: (From Merriam Webster online) theatrical entertainment of a broadly humorous often earthy character consisting of short turns, comic skits, and sometimes striptease acts.
Burlesque gets a bad rap as an entertainment form. It’s all strip tease. It started off as so much more! It was, at its best, a rich source of music and comedy that kept America laughing in the mid 1800s. Burlesque made fun of opera, plays and other loved activities of the upper classes in America and Great Britain. The shows used comedy and music as a sort of challenge to look at things in society differently. Love that! Modern day entertainments such as the Austin Powers series were born from burlesque. Poking fun at comic targets and asking the viewer to look beyond appearances.
Early burlesque shows were suggestive rather than “bawdy.” Suggestive. Definitely much better than just “giving it up” like a lot of women have been taught to do today. Women playfully reveling in their power to attract. Then disappearing at the end of the scene. Catch me if you can, you naughty boy! Would it surprise you that originally a womans’ wit was the draw and not her body? This changed as men took over management of these shows and wanted to flaunt the feminine form to draw in crowds. Just like everything…there is a cycle and popularity wanes and peaks.
Famous comedians were born out of burlesque acts: Jackie Gleason, Bert Lahr, Bob Hope and Fanny Brice are just a few names.
For my birthday my best friend Mary Ann booked us for a burlesque class in New York City. The class was run by the gorgeous Bonnie Dunn (above image). A few days ago I had the pleasure of learning from a real burlesque star! We made our very own tassels and she taught us how to entertain with various props. Chairs, gloves, boas and my favorite…giant feathers! It was such glamorous and fun play!
The reason why I’m writing about this is because it is a fun art form for you to explore. Google burlesque shows and go see with your girlfriends! Imagine what a fun girl outing that would be. Women enjoying each other and our God-given sensuality and playfulness! Bitch it up and take a class together! Play some really fun music like “Whatever Lola Wants,” and move and play with a boa. Don’t forget the audience before you. Flirt and play with them! This is a really fun way to give yourself attention and a sensual work out. Class dismissed. (Sassy smile)
Another reason why I want you to explore fun art forms like burlesque: for some reason, we women love to shake it. It makes us happy to do so! If you find yourself saying Drama Queen phrases such as “I want to be happy again,” “Am I depressed?” If you are fighting depression over a horrible breakup, find yourself googling “signs of depression” because of guy or personal drama, insert some fun mayhem in your life. It will give your Drama Queen the attention she desires and hopefully send you on a search for other fun things to explore. Give it a whirl. Your Bitch will love it!
